Memphis, TN: Birthplace of Rock & Roll

Last weekend, Brittany and I traveled the 100 miles to visit Memphis, TN, birthplace of Rock and Roll and the home of the world famous Beale Street.

For starters, we booked a hotel using Hotwire and got an amazing deal on a "3 1/2 star hotel in Downtown Memphis." Fort hose of you that are not familiar with Hotwire, the name of the hotel is not released until after you have made the reservation. The website gives you a price for a hotel with a certain star rating in a certain location. We lucked up with the Crowne Plaza in Downtown Memphis, complete with complimentary shuttle! The room was nice, and totally worth the $77. I highly recommend the website to anyone looking to book a hotel! (Just an FYI: the room we stayed in rents for $150/night on the hotel website!)

We started our day by having lunch at Charlie Vergos' Rendezvous, famous for their Memphis dry rub ribs. Per their website (www.hogsfly.com) "Presidents and potentates, the King and the Killer, Rolling Stones, *NSYNC, and everybody who’s anybody have all been down for a bite." Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of their ribs. (Sorry Charlie) They were good, but nothing special in my book. The atmosphere of the restaurant was fun and made for a great start to our Memphis adventure.

After lunch, we took a stroll around the streets of Downtown Memphis. One of the first stops on our list was Bank of America. I realize this may sound strange, but considering the BoA in Memphis is the closest to Tupelo, it was a welcomed site! It was nice to be able to use an ATM! We saw the Orpheum Theatre, which looked like a great place to see a show, but unfortunately we didn't have time this trip. We also happened up on a statue of none other than Elvis. It's completely natural that the "birthplace of Rock N Roll" has a statue of the King of Rock N Roll.

Beale Street was a true site to see. It is an important historical site from various periods of history including military battles, civil rights, and entertainment. Present day Beale Street is the home to various blues clubs & restaurants as well as a hoppin' spot for Memphis Nightlife.

Just a few of the signs that caught my attention!

We stopped in the Rum Boogie Cafe to see what it was about, mainly because I was a fan of the guitars on the sign. Once inside, there were guitars everywhere. Not just any guitars, guitars that were previously owned by different musical talents from all genres. All guitars were autographed by their previous owners, it was quite a site to see!

We didn't take time to look at all the guitars, but I did spot these two country artists!

Memphis is also home to a wide variety of museums, including the Gibson Guitar Factory and the Rock and Soul Museum. Both of these attractions are downtown, and we chose to include them in our trip. We toured the lobby and gift shop of the Gibson Guitar Factory, and it would be an amazing place to visit for any guitar player. There is an option to tour the factory and see the process of how guitars are made, but we decided to save that for a later time. We did tour the Rock & Soul Museum, which included an in depth look at how Blues music came about as well as how modern day Rock&Roll came to be. It also included different aspects of life in the pre-civil rights era, as well as tributes to Elvis and Johnny Cash.

A bag of cotton..symbol of the hardworking men and women.

Brittany and I sitting on the porch listening to musical hits of the 40's and 50's.

Johnny Cash and Elvis, both got their start on Beale Street!

After the museum, we drove across the bridge over the Mississippi River into Arkansas. (This marked my fourth state to be in on this clinical journey, as well as my first time driving across Old Man River!)

One of my favorite things about Beale Street was the live music that could be found inside every establishment. We chose to have dinner at BBKings and were treated to some fantastic guitar skills of 17 year old Will Tucker of the Will Tucker Band. He had a unique sound, and a great talent that just might make him world famous one day. We also met up with some Memphis locals, including Brittany's roommate, Moira. They recommended we try out Silky O'Sullivans, a piano bar down the street. Another thing Silky's is known for is the live goats they have on the patio. Too bad for us, the goats weren't out due to the cold! We didn't get to see the goats, but we did get to meet Silky!

Sunday morning, the shuttle driver at our hotel recommended Arcade Restaurant for breakfast. This was the filming site for Tom Cruise's "The Firm." Definitely a nice breakfast spot and it was on the trolley line, so we got to take a trolley back up through town.

Next stop on our Downtown Memphis tour was The Peabody Hotel. This hotel is absolutely stunning, but that was not our reason for going. The Peabody is home of the Peabody Ducks. Everyday at 11am, the ducks march down the red carpet into the fountain in the lobby. The ducks remain in the fountain until 5pm, when they march back down that same red carpet, into the elevator to the Royal Duck Palace on the rooftop. Click here to read more about the history of the ducks! It was a site to see, to say the least. The lobby was quite crowded as everyone waited for the ducks to make their march!
We had front row seats for the duck march!

Our final stop in downtown Memphis was at the Lorraine Motel, the site where Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated. Good ol' Wikipedia has the following about the motel: "During segregation it was an upscale accommodation that catered to a black clientele. He added a second floor and then drive up access for more rooms on the south side of the complex converting the name from Lorraine Hotel to Lorraine Motel. Its guests included musicians going to Stax Records including: Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, Aretha Frankling, Ethel Waters, Otis Redding, The Staple Singers and Wilson Pickett."

Overall, our trip to Memphis was very exciting and I look forward to going back, soon! We definitely missed our third partner in crime, Ashley; but were glad that she was able to be with her family, celebrating the life of her wonderful Nana, a great woman who will truly be missed by all who knew her. Our hope is to return to Memphis in the coming weeks to continue our Elvis tour by stopping at Graceland, as well as hitting up some other Memphis hotspots!

On the way home, we drove through New Albany, Mississippi. Tupelo is in Lee County and just up the road is New Albany. This is comical to me, being as I am from Lee County, which is just down the road from Albany, GA! Of course, I had to get a picture with the sign! And Albany folks--our Albany is much bigger than New Albany, Mississippi!

To our family and friends: we love you and miss you dearly! 8 more weeks till we come home and less than 100 days until we graduate! Stay tuned for more updates of our adventures!

Oxford, MS

Hello dear friends and family! I would like to personally apologize for the lack of blog posts here recently. Promise we'll do better!

Check out the sentence structure on the sign...
Now, I would like to share with you the adventure that we embarked on this past weekend. We woke up on Saturday, loaded up in the car, and traveled 45 minutes to Oxford, MS. And now, a short history lesson...

Oxford, Mississippi was originally founded in 1835 and currently boasts a population of 19,000 citizens;  including William Faulkner, Archie and Eli Manning :) and John Grisham (at one point in time). The city gained national attention in 1962 when the state governor and University of Mississippi officials refused to allow a black student to attend the university. US Marshals were sent to the town in an attempt to regain the peace. Riots broke out on campus and sadly ended when two men lost their lives. In the end the student was able to enroll in classes and graduated with a degree in history.

As you all know, Oxford is home to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). The city was recently named by USA Today as one of the top six college towns in the nation. (this is according to wikipedia, I tried and failed to find this statistic myself so there is no need for my BullDAWG fans to get defensive). Some degrees offered by the university include; accounting, business administration, engineering, law, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and medicine. While we were there we had the opportunity to traverse the Walk of Champions that winds around the middle of The Grove, the infamous football tailgating spot on campus. On a side note, we had every intention of attending the UGA/Ole Miss men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon but once again got the times zones mixed up and missed the game...we miss Eastern time!

We took the opportunity to walk around and enjoy the Square (downtown Oxford). There were plenty of several shops, boutiques, restaurants, and touristy photo opts to keep us busy for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

The phone in this phone booth actually worked!
We concluded our day in Oxford by chowing down on some super good BBQ at The Rib Cage and watching the Falcons game at one of the local spots. All in all it was a great day!

As you can see we are enjoying our time here in the Magnolia State, but we sure do miss all of you back in GA (and IN). Hope that all of you fellow classmates are enjoying, or at very least tolerating, the last clinical! Be sure to tune in again next week as we are taking a trip to Memphis and Graceland this weekend!

XOXO,
Ashley

SNOW, SNOW, everywhere!

Steadily coming down Sunday night!
Not sure if you've heard this yet, but it snowed here on Sunday night/ Monday morning! We were fortunate in the fact that it was a nice dusting (6-8in) of fluffy snow rather than that icey/sleety mess that our friends back in good ole' GA experienced. Needless to say, almost everything in town was shut down on Monday so Tabitha and I took our day off to explore the neighborhood, act like kids again, and relax on the couch with a good movie, warm blankets, and cups of hot chocolate!

Our adventure took us, on foot, down a winding road behind the house that we're staying in. There were only a couple of people in 4x4's (and a cop with chains on his tires) that were brave enough to attempt the windy, hilly, frozen asphalt that we explored. We took some pictures (shocked, I know) of the beautiful white fields, horses down the road, and the donkeys that live at the Buffalo Park. We tried to get closer to the donkeys, but apparently their owners taught them not to associate with girls from GA!

The next thing on our TO DO list was to make the most handsome snowman on the block! We had big plans of building a life sized snowman, unfortunately, the snow had other ideas. It was too fluffy and DID NOT want to stick together. You could forget rolling out big snowballs, it was not going to happen. Not that I wasn't proud of our finished product, how could you not love Frosty?

I had one more thing on my winter TO DO list before we headed back inside....

Making my snowangel.

The house and our cars covered in snow.
Clark, our four-legged roommate, playing in the snow!
That was pretty much our snowday in a nutshell. The roads were all clear this morning, so it was back to work for all of us today. There is a nice hill behind the building I work in and the plan is for the therapists to bring an extra change of clothes so we can sled on our lunch break tomorrow! I'll let you know how that goes. Hope that you are all enjoying the snow over there, but more importantly staying safe!

XOXO,
Ashley

Party Like A Rock Star!

On January 8, 2011, Ashley, Brittany and I attended the 76th birthday party for Elvis Presley, King of Rock and Roll! (side note: Brittany is a St. Augustine PT Student from Georgia completing her rotation at North Mississippi Medical Center, also known as our tourist companion for the next 8 weeks!)

Here is one of Elvis' yummy birthday cakes!

Because we toured his birthplace on his birthday, we were treated to birthday cake, in addition to touring all sites for free! (Elvis' birthday gift to us) No birthday party is complete without singing "Happy Birthday," and this was definitely done! See my Facebook profile for a video of the special birthday song. There were at least 300 people in attendance, including family members, childhood friends, and some of his greatest fans!

We decided to share our cake!

Tupelo, MS is the birthplace of Elvis. His childhood home, where he lived until he was 13, is on display as well as his childhood church. The house has been preserved and completely set up to allow tourists to walk through and take pictures. The home is a very small 2 bedroom shack.
The outside of the home!

Ashley and I on the porch swing!

The wood burning stove, and the dining room (complete with Elvis' highchair!)

The 3 of us in the bedroom;

I believe this is a note to Elvis from a fan...

We were also given the opportunity to tour his childhood church, Tupelo Assembly of God. The building has been restored to the best of ability. The building is the same, the pulpit is the same, but other aspects were restored or replaced. Elvis' 2nd cousin gave a beautiful presentation before showing a short video of a church service similar to the time when Elvis attended as well as video documentation of the restoration process!

Assortment of pictures of the church. The gentleman in the 3rd picture somewhat adopted us that day. He was constantly asking if we were enjoying ourselves and making sure we saw everything! (He is one of the chairmen of the organization that runs the Elvis Birthplace and Museum)

Other attractions include a small museum that chronicled the life and career of the King. Pictures were not allowed of this, but it was very nice. Several pieces of memorabilia were displayed including some costumes and family pictures.

No Elvis birthday party would be complete without some devout fans. Below are some pictures of one of our favorite fans we saw. I'm a little young to understand the obsession with the King, but I will never judge someone! After all, I am the girl who obsessed with concerts. :)

Of course, there was a gift shop complete with pretty much any piece of Elvis memorabilia one could ever want! As for our own purchases, we each bought a t-shirt and a birthday cup, as well as some other individual items.

Brittany and Ashley showing their Vanna White skills with his records!

Ashley LOVES Elvis! :)

Other items worth mentioning include the statute of 13 year old Elvis and the "Fountain of Life" which were in the courtyard area.

Ashley is reading the map making sure we aren't missing anything!

Last but not least we each took pictures with the life size cutouts of our favorite Elvis costume:

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the Elvis Birthplace and Museum! Next stop on our Elvis tour: Graceland!
